Orr Dewey Taplin, 81, of Little Rock, passed away Monday, April 12, 2010, due to complications following surgery for stomach cancer. Dewey was born December 5, 1928, in Little Rock to Orr Colby and Gladys Overman Taplin. He was raised in the Glen Rose community and was a graduate of Glen Rose High School and Capitol City Business College in Little Rock. His employment history included home construction and executive management positions in the Urban Renewal programs in both Pine Bluff and North Little Rock. His last position, prior to his retirement in 1998, was as a Contracting and Purchasing Officer for the Little Rock Wastewater program. He was a member and Deacon of Temple Baptist Church in Little Rock, and was a long-time participant in the Master's Builders Program, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping area churches build new or improve existing church buildings and facilities.
Dewey is survived by his wife, Doris H. Taplin of Little Rock, his son, Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) Glenn W. Taplin, and his wife, Becky Taplin, whom Dewey considered the daughter he never had, of San Antonio, Texas. He was the very proud Granddad of two granddaughters and their families, Allison Thyng, her husband, Major John Thyng, U.S. Army, and their daughter, Maddie; Amanda Willett, her husband Bry, and their four boys, Brandon Williams, Bry, Caden and Cole Willett; and one Grandson, Ryan Taplin, all of San Antonio. He also leaves behind a legion of nephews, nieces, other relatives, friends and neighbors whose lives he influenced and bettered during his lifetime of caring.
The family expresses their deep and sincere appreciation to his physicians, and the nursing and ancillary staff in the OR, SICU, and ward 4NW at St Vincent's for the care, compassion, and support they provided to him during his fight to live.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 14, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Huson Funeral Home, 6400 Mabelvale Pike, in Little Rock, and the funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, at Temple Baptist Church, 10710 Interstate 30. Interment will follow at Fairplay Baptist Church Cemetery in the Fairplay Community.
