Desmer Leonard Allen, age 86, of the Old DeRoche Community near Bismarck died at his home on April 21, 2007. He was born in Hot Spring County on September 9, 1920, the son of Sam Houston and Abbie Cook Allen.
He was a member of DeRoche Missionary Baptist Church. As a young man, he was a dairy & truck farmer and later retired from the Department of Arkansas Parks and Tourism at De Gray State Park.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Allen; four sisters, Odean Adams, Adell Ledbetter, Leecie Matlock and Audie Dunn.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Zella Marie Gardner Allen, to whom he married on December 10, 1938; a son, Elster & wife, Bonnie Hughes Allen; a daughter Diane Allen Hughes & husband, Ronnie, of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Marty Allen (Gina) of Little Rock; Wendell Allen (Teresa) of Social Hill; Abby Hughes Holsclaw (Jason) of Virginia; Aaron Hughes of Bismarck; and two great-grandsons, Thad and Trevor Allen of Social Hill.
Visitation will be Monday April 23, 2007 at the Ruggles - Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia. The family will receive family and friends from 6-8 PM.
Funeral Services will be at DeRoche Missionary Baptist Church located at 939 Hwy 128 in Bismarck, Tuesday April 24, at 10:00 AM, with Brothers T. Chris Morrison and Troy Bray officiating.
Internment will be in the Old DeRoche Cemetery under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be the grandchildren: Marty, Wendell, Thad & Trevor Allen, Aaron Hughes, and Jason Holsclaw.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Charlie Whitfield, Rubin Hardin, the deacons of DeRoche MBC, Drs. J. Gardner, R. Shroff, J. W. Smith, J. Burton and Arkansas Hospice Staff of Hot Springs.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to all of the Arkansas Hospice Foundation employees in Hot Springs for their support given to Desmer and family during his last days.
