Dennis Dean Smith, Sr., Senior Master Sergeant, (E-8), United States Air Force, Retired ,of Cabot passed away October 7, 2006 at the age of 65.
Dennis was born January 8, 1941 in Lonoke County, Arkansas to the late Fred Hutto Smith and Eddie Fulmer Smith.
He graduated from High School in Providence, Louisiana, and later from the Community College of the Air Force.
He married Linda Faye Taylor on October 24, 1969 in Blytheville, Arkansas. They made their home in Jacksonville, Arkansas, until moving to
Cabot, Arkansas in 1980.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Linda; three sons and one daughter. Mark and wife Marie of Beebe, Dennis Jr. and wife Tammy of Butlerville, Duane and wife Sandra of Sherwood, and Kimberly and husband Rev. Don Egbert, Jr. of Marietta, Ohio. Two sisters, Freeda Pierce, Eldora and husband Earl Martin of Jacksonville, two brothers, Rev. Jerrell Smith and wife Jolene of Hackett, Arkansas, and Eugene Smith and wife Nelva of Sherwood. Brothers-in-law, Rev. Neal Taylor and wife Edith of Papua New Guinea, Curtis Taylor and wife Denise of Winchester, Virginia, Rev. David Taylor and wife Patsy of Bells, Texas, Rev. Joseph Taylor and wife Gaye of Hobe Sound, Florida and sister-in-law, Mille and husband Richard Kyle of Jasper, Alabama. Sixteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly.
He served in the Little Rock Police Department for three years, before joining the Jacksonville Fire Department in 1965. He joined the Little Rock Fire Department in 1968, retiring in 2001. He served as Dispatcher of all Fire Equipment for LRFD for three years.
He joined the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1961 serving until 1964 when he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, serving until 1967. He joined the Arkansas Air National Guard in 1976 and trained as a mid-air refueler boom operator. He was named the NCO of the Year, Arkansas Air National Guard in 1981. In 1987, he transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve. He was Embassy Courier for the United States Government during ?Desert Storm?.
He retired from the Little Rock Fire Department and the United States Air Force Reserve in January 2001, after serving the public for 39 years.
He was a member of the Cabot Pilgrim Nazarene Church where he served on the advisory board, was head trustee and taught a Youth Sunday School Class.
Dennis held a private pilot?s license, loved flying and maintaining aircraft.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Melvin Mitchell. Entombment will be at Rest Hills Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be members of Little Rock Fire Department. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170.
