Dennie Eugene Calhoun ("Brother Dennie", as he was known by most of his friends) was called home to be with God on May 9th, 2018. He was born July 31, 1940, in Black Oak, Arkansas. Dennie was one of nine children in the family. His Mother, Rosie Edna Adams Calhoun, and his Father, Mack Donald Calhoun, both preceded him in death.
Dennie attended Tuckerman High School, in Tuckerman, AR. He would later receive his high school GED while serving in the United States Air Force, from October 6, 1959 to October 4, 1963. Dennie served a second enlistment in the Air Force, from September 20, 1965 to August 11, 1966, as a Chaplain Service Specialist, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. He continued his education at Ouachita Baptist University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. In 1980, Dennie received his Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, KY.
Dennie received his license in the Ministry in 1965, at Castlewood Baptist Church, in Vallejo, California. He worked in several civilian occupations before ultimately surrendering to God's calling for his life. He was ordained into the Ministry on September 21, 1971, at Sylvan Hills First Baptist Church, in North Little Rock. He loved the Lord and loved sharing the Gospel with everyone he met. Dennie pastored churches in Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Idaho and Montana. He was also a Chaplain in Spokane, Washington for a number of years. He officially retired from vocational ministry after serving over 50 years, but never stopped sharing the gospel as a servant of God.
Dennie loved to make people smile and always enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. He will be truly missed by everyone who ever met him.
Dennie was preceded in death by his son Nathan, three sisters and three brothers.
Dennie is survived by his wife, of 34 years, Connie Calhoun; three sons - Dwayne and his wife Michelle, Tim and his wife Dusty, and Mark; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; brothers, Donald W., Arnie A., and his wife Ann, and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 11, followed by a 3:00 p.m. Memorial Service at Smith - North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., NLR, AR 72114.
