David was the son of Joseph and Ada Bell Glymp. He attended Marshall County High School in Lewisburg, Tennessee and graduated in 1965. He attended Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee for one year before enlisting in the United States Army. David served in the United States Army as an infantryman from 1969-1970 during the Vietnam War era.
