Darius Mitchell Sr

Darius Franklin Mitchell Sr. (Mitch) as he was known by all, age 89 of Prescott, formerly of Arkadelphia, died on December 11, 2008, born May 17, 1919 in Nevada County, Arkansas to the late Jewell and Clyde Mitchell. He served as Master Sergeant in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He married Martha Turner of Arkadelphia, Arkansas May 17, 1944. They had four children. He attended Magnolia A&M (Southern Arkansas University) in Magnolia, Arkansas, finishing at Oklahoma A&M (State) University and taught Vocational Agriculture in Inola, Oklahoma for his entire teaching career. He was most proud of being the first VoAg teacher to ever receive Oklahoma's State Teacher of the Year award. He was loved by the community he served.
Darius and Martha were members of First Baptist Church, Inola, serving in many leadership positions for over forty years before moving to Arkadelphia in their retirement. Darius, a member of First Assembly of God, Prescott is also predeceased by Martha, daughter, Virginia and brother, Gervaise Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie Jewel Mitchell, son, Frank (Connie) Mitchell of Arkadelphia, daughters, Laura (Art) Evans of Broken Arrow, OK and Mary Davis of Fayetteville, AR., Three grandsons and two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. Sisters, Joyce Auxer Dellinger of Arkadelphia and Wilma Uzup of Eugene, Oregon.
Graveside funeral service will be 2 P.M. Saturday, December 13, 2008 in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens with Jerry Westmoreland officiating. Visitation will be from 12 Noon Saturday until service time in Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home.
