Daniel Worsley "DW" Richards, Sr., 91, of Little Rock, passed away Nov. 3, 2009 in the comfort of his home. He was born Sept. 10, 1918 in Forrest City to the late Ivan E. and Martha Mae Worsley Richards. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan Richards, Jr. of Memphis. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Betty Dawson Richards. He is also survived by his son, Dan W. Richards Jr. of Paron, his daughter Charlotte Detillo of Mississippi, his step-daughter Barbara Ann Cullum of Little Rock, eight grandchildren, along with numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was a veteran of World War II, a successful businessman, a motorcycle enthusiast, a pilot, and a faithful member of Indian Springs Baptist Church in Bryant. He served as Lieutenant in the Army during World War II, piloting various aircraft stateside and overseas. He raced a Harley Davidson motorcycle several times in the Daytona 100- mile beach race, winning the contest in 1955. He went to work in the motorcycle industry in 1936 and later founded what is known today as Richards Honda, becoming the first businessman to sell Honda motorcycles and automobiles in Arkansas. After retiring from the motorcycle business, he moved on to an interest in larger vehicles, building a successful trucking and brokerage firm known today as Rich Logistics. He maintained his passion for piloting throughout his life, owning and flying several small planes.
The family would like to offer our sincerest thanks and gratitude to the wonderful caregivers who helped take care of D.W. in recent months and years. Thank you to Kina Hayes, Kathey Haynie, Kelly Wilson and Jennifer Harris. You were a comfort to D.W. and are a blessing to the entire family.
There will be visitation Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main, 758-1170. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Indian Springs Baptist Church, Bryant with graveside services at Pinecrest Cemetery. Motorcycles are welcome during the processional to graveside.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the youth group at Indian Springs Baptist Church, P.O. Box 486, Bryant, Arkansas 72089.
