Daniel Louis Pilkinton, 87, of Little Rock, was born November 10, 1921 to the late Ivason and Louise Betts Pilkinton of Washington, Arkansas and died September 20, 2009 at a local health center. He graduated from Washington High School and Henderson State Teachers College, earned a Masters Degree from Peabody College and a Doctorate from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He served in military intelligence with the Army's 69th Infantry Battalion during WWII. During his long career in Arkansas public education, he served as principal and superintendent of schools in Altheimer, Lewisville and Arkadelphia; assistant Professor of Education at the University of Arkansas; Executive Secretary of the Arkansas School Boards Association; and Deputy Director of Finance and interim Director of the Arkansas Department of Education. Dr. Pilkinton was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Eugenia Bess "Bibbie" McDaniel Pilkinton, his brother, James and sisters, Louise Pilkinton Strack and Mary Pilkinton Hargis. He is survived by his daughter, Ann Felling and her husband, Greg of Texarkana, Texas; granddaughter, Jennie Felling and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Marleigh, all of Conway, Arkansas; and his sister, Elizabeth Caudle of Atlanta, Texas.
There will be visitation this evening, Tuesday, September 22, from 6-8 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock. Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 23 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hope, Arkansas, officiated by Chaplain Susan Hiller. Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock or to Hardy Memorial United Methodist Church at Texarkana, Texas.
