Daniel Wayne Burkett, a loving grandfather and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023, at the Hospice Home Care in Little Rock, Arkansas. Born on September 2, 1952, in England, Arkansas, Daniel lived a life filled with compassion and joy.
Daniel's world revolved around his beloved grandchildren. He was an amazing grandfather who showered them with love and affection. He cherished every moment spent with them, creating lasting memories that will be treasured by his family for generations to come.
In addition to his role as a grandfather, Daniel had a distinguished military career. He served in the United States Marines and was honored with various commendations for his dedication and service. He received the Rifle Expert Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze star, and the Good Conduct Medal. One of his proudest achievements was the opportunity to train others at Camp Pendleton on how to survive and adapt during wartime and times of crisis. After completing his military service, Daniel worked as a construction superintendent.
Beyond his military service and family life, Daniel had many hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. He was an exceptional storyteller known for captivating his audience with tales that transported them to different worlds. An avid reader himself, he found solace in the works of Louis L'Amour. His love for literature also extended to movies, where he admired the timeless charisma of John Wayne. Daniel's green thumb was evident in his beautiful garden which boasted the cleanest yard in town. When he wasn't immersed in literature or gardening, Daniel enjoyed playing computer games.
Daniel was born to Novel Coy and Pearl Dee (Highlander) Burkett in England, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings to whom he shared a deep bond: Joyce, Freda, Jerry, Johnny, and Junior.
Daniel is survived by his daughters Michelle Phelps and husband Doug, Tomye Redden and husband Warren, and Cody Burkett, all of Benton, Arkansas. His grandchildren Tealor, Jorden, Jessica, Hannah, Cooper, Krislynn, Bailey, Jamie, Lacey, and Raynie were the light of his life. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Cross, Amara, Eli, and Paul. Daniel's sister Betty Vogler resides in Texas while his brother Tony Burkett lives in California. He will be deeply missed by his entire family and the numerous friends who were touched by his kindness.
To celebrate the life of Daniel Wayne Burkett, a visitation will be held on October 13th, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market Street in Benton, Arkansas. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place at the same location at 10:00 AM. The burial will be held with military honors at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock at noon. Assisting as pallbearers are Tony Burkett, Teddy Burkett, Jonathan Rickard, Tealor Smith, Jorden McElmurry, and Cooper Phelps.
Daniel's legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace as his memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.
