Colonel Robert A. (Bob) Norman, 91, a long-time resident of Hot Springs and Shalimar, FL, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at his home in Cabot.
A World War II veteran with combat service in Europe, he retired in 1961 after twenty years active duty. He was a lifetime member of Military Officers of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Veterans, and served as Vice President of the Arkansas Retired Military Association. He was a member of the American Legion and the National Association for Uniformed Services.
Born in Oklahoma City, Ok, he attended the University of Oklahoma, was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was Intramural Manager and member of the boxing squad.
Colonel Norman believed in community activism, and was involved in many organizations throughout his life, including the Arkansas Alzheimer's Foundation, the United Fund, and the American Cancer Society. He was past president of the Arkansas State Wildlife Federation, the Hot Springs Retired Officers Chapter, the Lamar Bath House, the Hot Springs Wildlife Federation, and of the Westminster Presbyterian's Men of the Church (Hot Springs), where he also served as a Ruling Elder and Chairman of Board of Deacons. He also served his community as Chairman of the Salvation Army Board, and a Better Business Bureau board member.
Colonel Norman was an avid golfer and lover of music, singing in his church choir and in barbershop quartets and choruses.
He is survived by his wife, Su, three children, Sally Anne McLarty and husband, Jim of Newport, Josephine Frantiska Norman of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Robert Law Norman, of Albany, Oregon; six step-children, Jo-Ann Schopp and husband, Patrick of Conway, Kathleen Cash and husband, Raymond, of Hot Springs, Robert Danecki and wife, Ruth, of Alexander, Laurie Gentile and husband, Robert, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Derrick Danecki of Conway, and Jamie Ann Gault and husband, Tim, of Lebanon, Oregon; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Sean Randall officiating. Burial will be at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170.
