Clinton Andrew Southerland peacefully left this life on earth on Thursday, January 10, 2019, with his beloved wife Mildred by his side. Clinton (Clint) was born on August 16, 1929, in Wilburn, Arkansas to Sam and Crecy (Foust) Southerland. He was the third son and the eighth of nine children and will be delighted in seeing them all again in his eternal life.
Clint is survived by Mildred (Gage), his wife of 65 years; five children -- Kay Caancan (Archie-dec), Larry Southerland (Bev); Rita Carel (Jim); Joe Southerland (Joanna); Gary Southerland (Dolly); nine grandchildren—Laurie Bridgeman, Sam Southerland, Jake Southerland, Matt Carel, Zach Carel, Ava Trobee, April Southerland, Andrea Southerland, and David Southerland; and two great-grandchildren – Mikayla Bridgeman and Rally Carel.
Clint was greatly blessed in this life with a loving, devoted marriage to his best friend Mildred. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and was always quick to share their achievements with anyone who might open the door by simply asking if he had a family. Clint was a dedicated, faithful husband and father who raised his family in a loving, encouraging and nurturing environment. He was always there with wise counsel, loving reassurance or a kick in the pants when warranted. He had a sharp, quick wit, a generous smile, a hearty laugh, and truly unique observations and perspectives on life. Clint instilled in his children the drive to look beyond their front door, to be self-confident, to strive for excellence, and to meet life head-on. He was a Korean War Veteran and a life-long educator, starting in Science and Math instruction and later serving as a High School Superintendent for over 30 years. Anyone who knew him would agree that Clint was a faithful servant of the Lord through his many acts and deeds that were a support or service to others.
Clint was truly a blessing in the lives of his family, and he also touched the hearts and lives of many colleagues, students, neighbors and friends throughout his lifetime.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, at Smith-North Little Rock Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the following charities: The American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association of Arkansas.
