Claudia A. Lemke, 92, of Little Rock, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Born June 3, 1916 in Gowrie, Iowa, she was the daughter of Joe and Alice Liljegren. She was a WWII U.S. Navy nurse stationed in the Aleutian Islands. She left the Navy as a Lieutenant and then worked at the VA Hospital for 35 years until her retirement. She was a past president numerous times of the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Little Rock Garden Club. She loved public speaking and gave many talks around the state on "Flowers in the Bible" and "Arkansas Birds."
Claudia is survived by two sons, Walter John Lemke of Little Rock and Carl Walter Lemke and wife, Pamela of El Paso, Texas; and two grandchildren, Joseph Walter Lemke of Fort Bliss, Texas and Jennifer Mae Woolf and husband, David, also of El Paso. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. "Bud" Lemke, a long-time reporter for the Arkansas Democrat newspaper.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 7 from 2-4 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock. Services will be on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn Dr., Little Rock, officiated by Dr. Jeffery Hampton.
