Charles Harvey Martin, born February 6, 1926 in Fargo, Oklahoma to Harvey Morton Martin and Jessie Dickens Martin, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Hospital while being treated by the VA Angels for injuries sustained from a fall last Saturday. He served honorably as a Radioman in the USN Signal Corps during World War II, NTC San Diego, CA, Hedron, 14-1, FA 14.
During his senior year of high school, while making top grades, he started working for the Santa Fe Railroad as a full-time telegrapher. By the time he was 23, he was a Track Foreman. In 1950, he began selling Kirby vacuum cleaners door to door, eventually becoming a Kirby Factor Distributor in Brownsville, Texas and later in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Charles and his wife opened his vacuum cleaner sales and service store in Little Rock in 1980 on Cantrell Road, moving around the corner to Mississippi in 1984.
In the past, Charles served as a Deacon in his Methodist Church, and at one time, owned a Moonie airplane and two nursing homes in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Always an independent, energetic entrepreneur, he still took time to help a good many people along the way.
He leaves his wife of thirty years, Nancy Eaton Martin; his children, Roger Charles Martin of Clinton, Oklahoma; Karen Bell, Steven Martin, Rodney Martin and Jon Martin, all of Woodward, Oklahoma; Phil Martin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Kathy Smitherman of Sublett, Kansas; eighteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and one step-daughter. He is also survived by his brothers, Clarence Martin of Amarillo, Texas, Hugh Martin of Lakewood, Colorado and his sister, Doris Harder of Ft. Worth, Texas. He was predeceased by his step-son, David Alonzo Perry.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 27 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. John Fleming. Eventually his ashes will rest along with his wife's in time in the Mount Holly Mausoleum.
