Carolyn Jane Berry of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 in Arlington, Virginia.
She was born February 22, 1944 in Arkadelphia. The daughter of a career Army Officer, Carolyn traveled extensively with her family with postings throughout the United States as well as overseas assignments in England, Germany, and Guatemala.
She graduated as Valedictorian of the Arkadelphia High School Class of 1961. She attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and was a 1965 graduate of the University of Arkansas
where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. As a Fulbright Scholar, she did graduate work at the University of Madrid during the 1965-66 academic year. She rejoined her family in Northern Virginia in 1966 and the following year began her 36 year career as a civilian with the Department of the Navy in Civilian Personnel and later Manpower Management. At the time of her retirement in October, 2003, Carolyn was the Director of Manpower and Organization Management with the Military Sealift Command Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
She was predeceased by her father, Colonel (Ret.) John T. Berry and maternal grandparents Flave M. Carpenter and Ted Reaves Carpenter and her paternal grandparents Lillian B. James and John T. Berry, Sr. She is survived by her mother, Carolyn Jane Carpenter Berry of Arkadelphia, and her brothers, John T. Berry (Sally) of Fort Worth, Texas and Ted C. Berry of Falls Church, Virginia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Arkadelphia. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Capital Hospice, 6565 Arlington Boulevard, Suite 501, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.
