Carl Woodyear

Carl E. Woodyear, 82, of North Little Rock, died suddenly in his home Monday, November 4, 2013. He was born February 7, 1931 in Kerrville, Texas. He graduated from North Little Rock High where he played football, baseball and was a Golden Glove boxer. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy and 12 years in the Naval Reserve. Carl graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he worked for 37 years as Personnel Manager. He focused his efforts on the advancement of women, inclusion of minorities, and meaningful employment for the disabled. After retirement, always on a quest for learning, he graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Work. He worked at Baptist Health Hospice for 6 years as a Licensed Social Worker. A poet, artist, and author who marched to the beat of his own drummer, Carl wrote a novel, The Scroll and a self-help book, How to Get More of What You Want Out of Life. He was an elder at Park Hill Presbyterian Church and was a regular at the North Little Rock Athletic Club. Over his lifetime Carl logged over 60,000 miles running and walking. Most of all, Pappaw loved and cherished every moment he shared with his family.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Neal and Grace Pace Woodyear; and a sister, Bettye Sue White. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Curtis Woodyear; a son, Mark Woodyear (Michelle) of Wheeling, West Virginia; a daughter, Marianne Smith of Bentonville; and five grandchildren, Curtis and Melinda Woodyear of Lake Charles, LA, Carli Woodyear of Wheeling, WV and Patrick and Olivia Smith of Fayetteville.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday at North Little Rock Funeral Home, a Smith Family Funeral Home.
