Buford Hendrix
Owen Buford Hendrix departed this life for eternal life on July 5, 2006 at the age of 84. He entered into life on September 10, 1921 in the Piney Community in Pike County. He was the youngest child born to Owen Benson and Katherine Wingfield Hendrix. Preceded into eternal life were his parents, two brothers, Senator Olen C. Hendrix and Harold J. Hendrix; one son, Buford Dean Hendrix and his beloved wife, of 49 years, Helen G. Manning Hendrix.
Mr. Hendrix is survived in death by one daughter Peggy Stanley and husband, Don of Searcy, AR; two sons, Owen Benson Hendrix and wife, Mary and David L. Hendrix all of Antoine; two sisters, Viola Maddox and husband Barnell, of Antoine and Flossie Childers of Prescott; one brother-in-law, Wilbert Manning of Arkadelphia and very special friend, Nina Price. Mr. Hendrix is leaving a rich legacy of ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will always remember their granddaddy.
Mr. Hendrix was a member of the Antoine Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and as the song director for over fifty years. He will also be remembered for serving his community and nation in a variety of ways. He began serving his country by joining the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, where he served as a medic. In 1945, he returned home to Antoine, where he bought Hendrix Store, which was owned and operated by him until his death.
During his life in Antoine, he served on many Boards of Directors. He was the current secretary of the Board at the Bank of Delight, where he served for over 40 years. He was also serving as the Chairman of the Board for the Pike County Memorial Hospital. He served on this board for 47 years. He served on the Antoine City Council for over 40 years, the Delight School Board for fourteen years, and the Federal Home Administration for many years. He was a member of the Delight Lions Club for 20 years, and served as president of the Delight PTA. Recently, Mr. Hendrix was presented a national award in a ceremony held at the Arkansas State Capitol for his over fifty years of dedication to the National Weather Service. The awards presented were the Thomas Jefferson and Dick Hagemeyer Awards, which are the most prestigious that the National Weather Service gives.
Funeral services will be held at the Antoine Church of Christ on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at 2:00 PM. with Bro. Wallace Alexander and Bro. Gene Jester officiating. Burial will be in the Antoine Cemetery under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home of Arkadelphia. Mr. Hendrix's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pike County Memorial Hospital 315 E. 13th Murfreesboro, AR 71958 or The Southern Christian Home in Morrilton, AR.
