Betty Jean Haymon, 83, of Alexander, passed away January 31, 2016. She is survived by her husband, James Haymon, and daughters, Dianna Young (James) of Alexander and Libby Ditrick (Mike) of Many, Louisiana, and other family and friends.
Betty Jean Bounds Haymon was born on August 17, 1932 to Annie Mae Jones Bounds in a little farmhouse near Latta, South Carolina. She had no sisters or brothers but she lived with her mother and loving grandparents. When she was a young girl, they all moved into town two blocks from the Library, which led to a lifelong love of books.
When Betty was sixteen, she met a handsome young GI names Jimmy Haymon. He was sent to Korea and soon began a four-year letter writing affair. When he returned, they were married the next day and he took the little South Carolina girl to Las Vegas. Her hometown was taking bets on how soon she would be back. They all lost for this began a 63 year long marriage.
Jimmy and Betty traveled around, had one daughter in Delaware, then settled in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. There they bought a hardware store and adopted a sweet little girl. While there, Betty single handedly got a new school built for the children. When the girls were grown, she went to nursing school and they moved to Many, Louisiana.
Betty worked as a nurse for 14 years at Heritage Manor Nursing Home before retiring. She spent her last years in Arkansas with her daughter on her farm.
