LITTLE ROCK~Betty Jean Gehr, age 88, of New Orleans, Louisiana, died on November 26, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Michael Garner in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 9, 1921 to the late John Robert Proctor and Henrietta Augusta Bode-Proctor.
Left mourning are her husband of 65 years, Clarence Edward "Ned" Gehr Jr. and her daughter, Nancy Garner, who cared for her mother during the last months of her life. Also surviving is her dear sister, Carol Eckert of Vashon Island, Washington; her other four children, David Gehr of Columbus, Ohio, Cathy Gehr of Auckland, New Zealand, Shirley Conachey of Kingwood, Texas and Mimi Gehr of Denham Springs, Louisiana; and her six grandchildren, Sean and April Fetter, Kent Garner, Marina and Mallory Salcedo and Andrew Conachey.
Mrs. Gehr was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Audrey Dawson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Joyln Minotti of Cleveland, Ohio and their own beloved dog, Sammy.
Trained as a registered nurse in Pittsburgh, Betty Jean worked in Pittsburgh, Toledo, Ohio and New Orleans, Louisiana.
During the height of their retirement, Betty Jean and Ned enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with their dog, Sammy and across the globe to such places as South America, Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, France, Spain, Switzerland, Baja California to go whale watching and many other wonderful places. One of her favorite past times in her later years was reliving her magnificent travel experiences with her children and grandchildren through the use of maps, stories and photographs.
