Betsy Hughes Borchert, of Little Rock, passed away December 13, 2015 at her home. She was born in 1945 in Little Rock, the daughter of George and Margaret Buchanan Hughes. Betsy is survived by her sister, Georgia Saxon (Bret) of Ohatchee, Alabama; nephew, Todd Godfrey and his sons, Travis and Trenton of Junction City, Kansas; nieces, Jennifer Kelly (David) and children, Craig, Adam and Zachariah of Madison, Alabama, and Joleyn Godfrey of Richmond, Kentucky; stepmother, Margaret Cate Hughes of Benton; stepdaughter, Laurie Ann Ross (Charlie) and granddaughters, Catherine Ann and Jane Lee Ross of North Little Rock; stepson, Lee Borchert (Jack Pettit) of Dallas, Texas; and stepbrothers, Greg Simmons (Carolyn) of Benton and Doug Simmons (Lynne) of Katy, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, Walter and Doris Hughes of Benton, and Charles and Grace Buchanan of Monmouth, Illinois, husband, Donald L. Borchert, and great-niece, Joy Elizabeth Kelly of Madison, Alabama.
Betsy retired in 2011 from Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield after a 43 year career in various management positions. She earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and was a Life Member of the UALR Alumni. She was also a Fellow in the Academy for Healthcare Management.
Betsy had a great deal of love for her husband, family and friends as well as her church home at Second Presbyterian Church. She was an ordained elder and deacon, served as a Stephen Minister, was past moderator of the Personnel Committee, a hospital visitor, led card making for Pastoral Care, served on the Officer Nominating Committee and assisted with stewardship. Betsy was also active in Presbyterian Women, volunteered for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild in their Orchestra and You Program, and belonged to the Departmental Club.
Betsy's other volunteer activities included past Board member of the Presbyterian Urban Council, Little Rock chapter of Altrusa International and the Administrative Managements Society. She was also a past Board member of the Arkansas Society Daughters of the American Revolution, former State Chaplain and State Historian and former State Outstanding Junior Member.
Betsy enjoyed home and garden design, various types of needlecraft and paper crafting. Her happiest years were those married to her beloved Donald.
A celebration of Betsy's life will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock on Monday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Second Presbyterian Church or the Pulaski County Humane Society.
