Bertis L. (Mac) McDermott, of Beebe, Arkansas, was born on January 1, 1927, in Harrisburg, Illinois to Vollie and Elsie Oglesby McDermott, and he died August 2, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wesley McDermott; and one sister, Louise Ledbetter.
He is survived by his wife, Clara McDermott of the home; three sons, Mike McDermott and wife Debbie of Jacksonville, Pat McDermott and wife Dixie of North Little Rock, and James McDermott and wife Annette of Brighton, Missouri; three grandsons; Brian McDermott and wife Marcie of Palestine, Brent Hallmark and wife Gina of Jonesboro and Scott Hallmark of North Little Rock; three granddaughters; Amanda Goodenow and husband Nate of Lawrence, Kansas, Leann Carson, and Shelby Larson and husband Brandon all of Springfield Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Raleigh Russ, Jayson Tyler McDermott, Hayden Hallmark, Adlyn Hallmark, Rylee Larson, Bailey McDermott.
Mac went into the Navy in 1944 at the age seventeen and served twelve years. He then switched to the Air Force where he served for eight years and several months before retiring. Mac and Clara were married on April 20, 1950 in Orange, Texas where he was stationed at that time. They lived in several other states before ending up in Arkansas in 1959 where Mac was stationed at LRAFB. They have lived in Beebe since June of 1963. Their three sons all graduated from Beebe High School.
When Mac retired from the Air Force in 1964, he went to work at Arkansas Best Freight, retiring in 1986. Mac made gardening a hobby and he enjoyed sharing the bounty with friends and neighbors.
His biggest joy in his life was his wife and three boys until his grandchildren and great- grandchildren were born and they were his pride and joy. Mac will be greatly missed by all of them and his many friends.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Beebe, with interment in Antioch Cemetery. Billy Pruitt, Bobby Pruitt, Brian Johnston, Arville Benton, Charley White and Greg Hall will serve as pallbearers. Richard Knott is an honorary pallbearer.
