Azmy Iskander, age 90, of Little Rock, AR, passed away on February 25, 2025. Born on August 15, 1934, to Rosa and Aziz Iskander in Cairo, Egypt, he was the youngest of 12 siblings. Azmy grew up in a Christian family, and though he lost his father and two siblings by age 5 and faced religious persecution, he overcame grief and adversity and began to excel in boxing and academics. As a national boxing champion and having scored second highest in the nation for his undergraduate studies, he was directed by the state to pursue a career in medicine.
God's hand on his life was evident early in his medical career when his life was spared due to an unexpected 24-hour delay in his deployment to the front lines the day before the Six-Day War between Israel and Egypt began.
In 1971, Dr. Azmy immigrated to America with his wife, Amira, and their three children—Faith, Emily, and Amir. Though he faced many challenges, including the loss of his son Amir in 1999, his faith and devotion to family and Christ remained unshakable.
Dr. Azmy dedicated his life to healing, both spiritually and physically. Time and time again, he would say, “As a physician, I can prescribe medicine, but only the great physician can heal." He founded a nonprofit missions organization and led medical missions worldwide for 40 years, sharing the Gospel and providing medical care to those in need. Azmy and Amira made countless mission trips to Africa, the Middle East, and the Philippines, starting church plants, training pastors, and operating clinics. One highlight of his career was serving as the personal physician to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, where, through God's provision, he negotiated the release of three Christian prisoners sentenced to death for witnessing. Azmy never stopped desiring to be on the mission field. At 90 years old, he had plans to return to Egypt this spring to share the Gospel.
Dr. Azmy will be remembered for his compassion, his selflessness, and his unwavering faith. His legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and all the lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. He had a hunger for knowledge and was deeply committed to seeking the wisdom of God. This passion became a legacy, as he passed it down to every member of his family, nurturing in them the same desire to seek understanding and grow in their faith. Azmy changed countless lives and will continue to inspire those who knew him and follow in his footsteps.
He is survived by his wife, Amira; daughters Faith and Emily; sons-in-law Tom and Michael; and seven grandchildren: Rachel, Joshua, Victoria, David, Tayte, Alexander, and Derrick.
Azmy will be deeply missed and never forgotten. A visitation will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock on Monday, March 3rd, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
