Annie Mae Benton Orsburn, age 99, of Arkadelphia died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in Arkadelphia. She was born November 28, 1909 in Whelen Springs, AR the daughter of W. R. and Mary E. Frizzell Benton. She was a graduate of Arkadelphia High School, attended Henderson-Brown College and Arkansas State Teachers College. She taught school for two years prior to her marriage to Foy Walter Harper in 1929. They lived in El Dorado, AR where she was active in the community as Girl Scout leader, President of Yocum PTA, and substitute teacher. She returned to Arkadelphia in 1948 where she worked as manager of the Huie Law Firm, became the first president of the Arkadelphia Business and Professional Women's Club, and served as president of the Annie Maude Evans Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church. Later she married E. W. Orsburn and moved to Little Rock. After Mr. Orsburn's death she returned to Arkadelphia where she lived the remainder of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Walter Harper, two sisters, Josie Benton and Grace Nelson, one brother, Robert E. Benton.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia Apt and husband Lee of Ames, Iowa, four grandchildren, Mark Apt, Bryan Apt, Jeffrey Harper, and Todd Harper, two great grandchildren, Sarah Harper and Benton Harper, one nephew Robert Nelson and wife Carolyn and one niece, Mary Josie Shaw.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday November 13 in the Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Calhoun officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery near Gurdon. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
