Ann Strickland Vining, 76, of Arkadelphia, went to be with the Lord peacefully early Friday morning, August 21, 2009 with her husband and six children at her bedside. She was born September 9, 1932 in Nashville, Ark. to the late Charles and Mary Strickland.
After graduating from Arkadelphia High School she attended Ouachita Baptist University where she met and married her sweetheart for life, Billy Coleman Vining, of Eudora, Ark. They would have been married for 60 years this Christmas Eve. She is survived by six children: Charlotte Vining Douglas of Alma, Ark., Billy Vining, Jr. of Hot Springs, Ark., Amanda Vining Morgan of Hot Springs, Ark., Andy Vining of Marshall, Ark., Molly Vining Wallace of Arkadelphia, Lon Vining of Montreal, Canada and the late Polly Ann Vining. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Strickland of Kodiak, Alaska and a sister, Charlotte Strickland Hunter of Arkadelphia. Ann, lovingly called Nana, is survived by 21 adoring grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren, one sister Lillian Strickland Wasson of Springdale, sister-in-law Sarah Strickland of Arkadelphia, and brother-in-law Kendall Hunter of Arkadelphia.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia for 55 years where she worked with youth, missions, was a soloist and part of the choir, and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of PEO. She was OBU basketball's "team Mom" from 1954-1989 assisting her husband who coached the Tigers. She achieved some fame through being the Ouachita Homecoming Queen who was 'kidnapped' for three days by the opposing Henderson team in November, 1950. Those who knew her well knew that her door was always open, there was coffee in the coffee pot, and there was an extra plate at the table.
Visitation will be at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia from 2-5 pm Sunday, August 23. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 24 at 2pm at First Baptist Church Arkadelphia. The family will hold a private graveside burial after the funeral to celebrate her life in the Lord.
Pallbearers the oldest grandsons from each of her children's families: Cole Douglas, Matt Vining, Tyler Morgan, Drew Vining, Will Wallace and Kaleb Vining. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Justin Vining, Mark Vining, Shane Morgan, Nate Wallace, Josh Wallace, Noah Vining, and Isaiah Vining. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bill and Ann Vining scholarship fund at OBU or to First Baptist Church, Arkadelphia Missions Fund.
