Alton O'Neal, age 93, of Murfreesboro, died Friday, June 22, 2012. He was born on December 31, 1918, at Kirby, the son of James Peter O'Neal and Izora Johnson O'Neal. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dewey Sue Duncan O'Neal. A retired truck driver, he served two terms as mayor for the city of Murfreesboro and 12 years as that city's chief of police. He was deputized by five different Pike County sheriffs. He was a member of the Murfreesboro First Baptist Church and former member of the Murfreesboro Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Betty O'Neal of Murfreesboro; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patti O'Neal of Long Beach, California and Connie and Danny Widner of Brentwood, California; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Susan O'Neal of Fort Defiance, Arizona and Les and Charlotte O'Neal of Benton; five grandsons; and three granddaughters. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, June 24, 2012, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood with Bro. Harold Turner officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Lamb, Jarrod Reid, Tommy Steuart, Preston "Pep" Glenn, Travis Hill and Dickie Branch.
