Altha Self Vann, age 90, of Norman, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2014. She was born on November 25, 1923, in Gum Springs, the daughter of Rub Lillard Self and Mary Caroline Duke Self. On November 4, 1939 she was married to Karl K. Vann who preceded her in death on February 23, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert Paul Vann, Karl Kenneth Vann, Jr.; two grandsons, Kevin Paul Vann and Frank Anthony Vann; two brothers, Bruston Self and Alvin Glen Self; and two sisters, Ruby Lee Dutton and Margie Dee Mullins. She was a faithful and active member of the Norman First Baptist Church for many years; was a talented and gifted singer with a beautiful voice, always willing to sing when asked and enjoyed playing many instruments. A hard worker her entire life working numerous jobs throughout the years, she worked for Keller Industries in Texas and for the Shoe Factory in Mount Ida for many years until she retired. She enjoyed working in her flower beds and grew the most gorgeous irises. Altha was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, always putting her family first and cherished each and every member of her family. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by one son, James Burl Vann and his wife, Ida Mae, of Woodville, Texas; four daughters, Bonnie Vann Fiedler of Shreveport, Louisiana, Carol Vann Smith and her husband, Stephen, of Pineville, Louisiana, Helen Vann Judalet of Woodville, Texas and Bea Vann Beck of Mount Ida; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward R. and Eloise Self of Topeka, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 16, 2014, in the Norman First Baptist Church with Bro. James Hughes officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the nurses and staff of the Montgomery County Nursing Home for the wonderful and loving care they always gave to our precious Altha.
