Alter Lee Cowan, 94, passed away August 20, 2011. She was born May 16, 1917 in Smyrna, Arkansas to Rosie B. and Dave C. Cowan, the fifth child of six. Her parents, sister, Mary A. Lyons, four brothers, Charlie, Marshall, James and Willie Cowan, along with a nephew, James Charles Smith, preceded her in going home. Alter Lee was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Searcy, a member of its Sunday School class, Missionary Board and was an Elder of the church.
She is survived by her nephew, Earnest Lee; great-nieces, Renitha Robertson, Deborah Smith and April Smith; and great-nephews, Charlie Smith, Dewayne Smith and Tony Brooks.
She was a Home Economics teacher in Warren, Arkansas from which she retired early to come home and care for her mother. Alter Lee was a member of the White County Hospital Volunteers until her late 70's. She was an active member of the Home Extension of Searcy until 1999 and was a member of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association.
Alter Lee enjoyed people, especially teaching young people the proper etiquette of social life. She was close to her nephew, Earnest Lee, "Ernie" she called him. He was the son she never had, her namesake. Aunt Alter Lee was the only one who could keep him quiet!
She loved her family and we loved her. We know she's in a better place. She was the one to talk to about anything and she never judged, just offered Godly words of wisdom. A funny woman, sophisticated, well-groomed. She gave us much love. We are glad to have had her in our lives and will miss her. Until we meet again, rest in love; we know you are at peace.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 301 E. Pleasure, Searcy, officiated by Rev. Jerry McClure, followed by burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
