Allene Alverson

Alene (Williams) Alverson was born on December 26, 1921, to ZB and Annie (Lawson) Williams in Perry County, Alabama. She was the eldest of six children. After graduating from high school, Allene got her RN from Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa. She served as an army nurse during World War II, then went to work as a private nurse after the war. She married Leo Alverson, in 1949. Leo had been a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and shortly after he married Allene, he rejoined the Air Force. Together they moved to Washington, DC, then to Little Rock, where their son George was born, then Germany and Texas. Leo retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1960, and they settled in North Little Rock. There, Leo continued to fly for a private flying service while Allene focused on keeping house and raising their son. After he retired, in 1977, they enjoyed a long retirement, playing golf, going to the races in Hot Springs, and traveling. After Leo died in 1999, Allene continued to live in North Little Rock for almost 20 years. She moved to Melrose, Massachusetts, in 2018 to be closer to George and his family. Allene was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Leo Alverson, her infant son Craig, three brothers, Heflin, Leeward, and BW Williams, and her sister, Dean (Williams) Haskett. She is survived by her son George Alverson, his wife Brigid, two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Maura Alverson, and a brother, Chester Williams, of Federal Way, Washington. Graveside service will be at 12 p.m. Monday, August 26, at Little Rock National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
