Alene Francis Strand, 78, of Little Rock, passed away June 2, 2009. She graduated from nursing school in Memphis as an RN and retired from the Arkansas Human Services Department as a nursing home inspector. In the 1950's she worked with Dr. Jonas Salk in Los Angeles and was involved with the development of the first polio vaccine. She was a farmer's daughter, born in the small eastern Arkansas town of Keiser, where she graduated from Keiser High School in 1948. She was a founding member of Celebration Christian Fellowship in Little Rock.
She is survived by her son, James Strand; sister, Carole Kennerly (Jay) of Springfield, Illinois and brother, Marion Kyle Reed (Alma) of Las Vegas, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Strand, her parents, Burley W. and Margie Glasgow Reed and a sister, Billie Franklin.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 5 at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), Little Rock.
