Virginia Sue Dobbins, 97, was born on March 23, 1924, to Minnie Moore and Charlie Lucas. She passed away on December 21, 2021.
Born in Scranton, Arkansas, where her father was a coal miner, Sue’s family remained in Logan County until the mines were closed and work became scarce. At a very young age, Sue moved with her family to the Bryant area. At 14, she met Johnie Dobbins, and at 17, they married a few days before Pearl Harbor was attacked. Johnie soon left to serve in WWII. Upon his return in 1945, Sue and Johnie together built the house that would become home to two sons, Lex and Roger, and where she’d live out her life.
Sue was truly a pioneer of Bryant and was one of the last of the “old Bryant” generation. Because of her gregarious, inquisitive nature, she made friends easily and knew the comings and goings of all of her neighbors in Bryant. A few years after Johnie’s death, she made a new friend in John Hardin of Sheridan. They remained companions until her death.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Dorothy Kenzel (Gordon) and Anna Adams (Clarence); brother, Kenneth Lucas (LaRuth); son, Roger; grandson, Jerry; and infant daughter, Rebecca.
She is survived by John Hardin; her sister, Mary Cooper of Little Rock; her son and daughter-in-law, Lex and Fay Dobbins of Bryant; and the greatest loves of her life-her great-granddaughters, Kristina Dobbins of Ward and Victoria Dobbins Wallace (Jesse) of Benton and her great-great granddaughter, Abigail Stevens of Ward. She is also survived by many Lucas and Dobbins nephews and nieces.
Sue’s life was extended and enhanced in the last 18 months through the loving care of Kristy Cordell, Shara Drennan, Renee Garrett, Michael Laurent, Debbie Modlin, and Becky Laurent. They have become part of our family, and we appreciate their dedication to Sue’s care. Her loyal friend, Anita Henson, provided entertainment during her weekly visits. We offer a special thanks to her neighbor of 55 years, Charlotte Love, who has long been a part of our family.
