Sanford West

Sanford (Sam) West passed away October 5, 2016. He was 78 years old. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He served in the United States Navy and spent a tour on the Lexington aircraft carrier. After the Navy, he spent a forty year career with the Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring as Superintendent in 1994. His life-long love of golf brought him to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. He was a charter member of Diamante Country Club where, in his words, he played "eight days a week." He also had life-long friends from his Country Club in Memphis and also Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, WA. When his legs no longer allowed him to play golf, he and his wife spent several years traveling in their motor home. He loved to drive and was so interested in all the places they visited. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary West; and his son, Frankie. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughters, Karen Phillips and husband Bruce, Julie Day and husband Chris, Amy Brockway and husband Ron, and Wendy Bassett and husband Steve McLaughlin; brother, Robert West; sister, Madeline Oertwig; grandchildren, Cory Phillips, Jordan Phillips, Addisyn Day, Brady Day, Aidan McLaughlin, Alex McLaughlin, and Emma McLaughlin; and his beloved special helper, granddaughter, Abby Brockway. Reception held from 1:00-2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market St., Benton, Arkansas 72015. Memorial service immediately following at 2:00 P.M.
