Marie Abney

Marie Tisdale Abney, 95, is dancing with The Lord. She passed away November 27, 2014 in Little Rock, Arkansas. "Then he turned my sorrow into joy! He took away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy." Psalm 30:11

As an educator, world-traveler, and mother of three boys, Marie had an inspiring combination of faith, strength, independence, and wisdom.

Born on January 5, 1919 in East Point, Louisiana, Marie grew up in Louisiana, Arkansas and East Texas. A proud graduate of Baylor University in 1940, she touched the lives of many through her work as a teacher at Highland Baptist and in the Caddo Parish Schools. She earned her masters degree in Special Education from Northwestern State University and she always spoke with fond remembrance of her former students. As a resident of Shreveport for more than fifty years, Marie was a member of Highland Baptist Church and later Broadmoor Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy. She lived in Little Rock the last seven years to be near her granddaughters. Marie was a wonderful storyteller, recounting her experiences from around the world with entertaining excitement and detail. She maintained a joyful attitude, grateful heart, and happy feet until the end of her days.

Many loved ones were waiting to embrace her in heaven, her parents Albert and Stella; her brother Bill and sisters Velma, Mildred, Eunice, and Geneva; her former spouse Lon; and her great-grandson, Noah Tisdale Owens. Her legacy of compassion for others and adventurous spirit is carried on by her surviving family members, her three sons Gary Keith (Marilyn), Lon Kent, and Paul Craig (Sibylle); her nine grandchildren Kit, Ellen, Karen, and Meghann; Hal, Grant, and Jackson; Eddie and Ella; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers A.J. and Donald. She loved us all "the best", especially her granddaughter Ellen, who truly earned the distinction with her exceptional love and care.

Memorial donations may be made in Marie's name to the Arkansas Dream Center or the charity of your choice.

Services to honor her life will be held at Forest Park East on January 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Crawford Williams. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Shreveport, Louisiana.
