Our precious Mother and Mimi, Joan Perkins Horner, passed away on January 16, 2019 of complications from a stroke. She was born March 21, 1934 in Manila, Arkansas to the late Anita and Howard Perkins.
Joan’s hometown was Manila, but she faithfully drove daily 18 miles (each way) to be a Blytheville Chickasaw! She made life-long friends at BHS whom she traveled annually with up until her death.
After graduation, Joan attended Lindenwood School for Girls in St. Charles, Missouri. Shortly thereafter, she was swept off her feet by Glenn Horner and they were married for more than 56 years until his death in 2009. Joan and Glenn moved to Blytheville where they raised their children Ellis, Jane and Joe.
Joan loved music and was an accomplished pianist, organist and played the bells (one of her favorite times of the year). She was a talented seamstress, a master gardener, an avid reader and a skilled bridge player. This southern lady was active in her communities including the PEO society, the Junior Auxiliary and the Mississippi County Cotton Wives.
Joan relocated to Little Rock seven year ago where she was embraced by the Ben Miller Sunday school class at Highland Valley United Methodist Church. She loved moving to the “big city” and found many new friendships including the “Ya-Ya’s”.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn and her son, Ellis. She is survived by her daughter, Jane, and husband Joe Johnson; son, Joe Horner and his wife Annette; grandchildren, Denise Horner and Jay Horner; brother Rance Perkins and his wife Martha; and nieces Jennifer Perkins and Charlotte Perkins Caroom.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., January 21, 2019 at Highland Valley United Methodist Church in Little Rock. A memorial in celebration of her life will follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
