George Gillmore

George G. Gillmore passed away Saturday, September 19th at age 97. He was born October 11, 1922 to Opal and Clyde Gillmore in Ft. Lupton, CO. The family later moved to Centralia, IL where he finished high school then attended James Millikin University in Decatur, IL for two years and then joined the service.

George served 3 ½ years during World War II with the 15th Air Force, 1 ½ years in the European theatre. He returned to Millikin and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went to work for Met-L-Wood corporation in Chicago, IL as a sales engineer, and traveled seven states in the Midwest for 8 years. Tired of traveling, the family moved to Denver, CO and George started a long relationship with American General Life Insurance Company in Houston and San Antonio, TX. They then moved to Little Rock to open the Life and Related Products division with Rebsamen Insurance. Retiring from Rebsamen, he opened his own agency Gillmore & Associates, an independent all lines life insurance agency. Retiring from the life insurance business, George had a vending machine business called Drinks R Us. George never met a stranger, and his wife said he would talk to a post if it would talk back to him, so the vending machine business was a great hobby.

George was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Life member of the Million Dollar Round Table of the Life Insurance Industry for 25 years, past state President and District Governor of Sertoma Civic Club, Treasurer for many years for National Association of Insurance and Planners of Arkansas, life member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, and a 32° Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents Opal and Clyde Gillmore, a brother Russell, and sister-in-law Lois Landon. He is survived by his wife Imogene of 68 years, daughters Dr. Diana Gillmore of Slidell, LA and Dr. Deborah Pickens of Joplin, MO, two wonderful grandsons Ryan Pickens (Kira) Drew Pickens (Davya), and nieces Liz Landon, Shari Landon, Celeste and Dr. Walter Adams, and family all of the Dallas area.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Lenette Lyas for her patient and wonderful care, to Stonehaven Assistant Living nurses, aides, and staff for the care and attention they extended to George and to Arkansas Hospice for their help and concern they had for George and family.

A private burial will be September 24th at Arkansas Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. Celeste Adams (niece) will lead a short memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, Alzheimer’s Arkansas (201 Market Center Dr. Little Rock, AR 72205), or a charity of your choice.
