Chris Prouty passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 16, 2021. She began life as Dorothy Christine Chapman and was born on March 30, 1936 to George Robert and Annie Pearl Chapman. However, HATING the name Dorothy, she went by “Chris.” She was the second of 7 children growing up in Biscoe, Arkansas on a farm. After a time, she moved to North Little Rock where she lived with the family of Cecil and his wife Julie Mae Barron, who were affectionately known as “Pappy” & “Big Momma”.” She completed high school, and then decided to stay in North Little Rock after graduation. It was there while working as a carhop for a drive in restaurant that she caught the eye of a handsome Air Force airman from California named Walter William Prouty. They hit it off and after a whirlwind 30 day romance got married on November 27, 1958. After the wedding, she became a stay home military wife traveling the globe to stay with her husband. She lived in Spain, Guam and a host of other places. Once they were settling down at their last base in Louisiana, she became a mother when she and Walter adopted a baby boy named that is now known as Walter Aaron Lee Prouty. Once Walter William retired from the Air Force, they took their small family back to Arkansas. While raising their child, Chris was also a waitress and later worked at Target. After the loss of her husband, Chris retired from working. Then she became a “Nanny” to her 4 grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband; one sister, Mary Son; and one brother, Robert Lee Chapman.
She is survived by her son, Walter Prouty; his wife, Jamie Prouty; four grandchildren, Alexandra Brooke, Jasmyn Lea, Ian William James and Logan David Prouty; brother, Shelby “Gene” Chapman; and three sisters, Ruby Todd, Jane Chapman and Judy Bell; and also other extended family and friends.
She had two great passions in her life. The first was her husband and the second was as a “nanny” to her 4 grandchildren. She will always be remembered for being stubborn, bull headed, driven, and assured that she knew it all and was always right. She will always be remembered for these qualities, but also for her love and care. She was loved by family and friends and will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home (1921 Main Street, North Little Rock). Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Friday, August 20, 2021 at the funeral home with burial following at 12:30 PM at Little Rock National Cemetery.
